About Kathleen Willingham

Kathleen Willingham

I am a painter working in acrylic/mixed media, oil and pastel.  My first love has always been painting abstractly, but I am also a landscape painter usually painting en plein aire.  I enjoy being outside and painting my environment whenever possible.  I have also spent considerable effort in the exploration of natural subjects such as rocks, driftwood and flowers as an extension of the landscape.

I move through each of the mediums with the intention that painting techniques in one medium will lead to explorations for the next medium and that each is an inspiration for new ideas in the other.  Pastels offer opportunities in layering, use of rich or soft color and development of amazing textures that are an avenue for personal growth and expression.  I am inspired by the beauty of nature, atmospheric conditions, seasonal colors and shapes as I see them or pulled from my imagination when I am painting landscape.  This often transitions into my abstractions.

I was born and raised in rural Fauquier County, Virginia and that is where I live and work.  I am a retired public school art teacher.  As I look back on my years of teaching art to young people and my efforts as an artist, I have always searched for creative and meaningful learning experiences for myself as well as my students.  I regularly participate in jurored shows locally and nationally, show my work in several galleries in the region to include Middle Street Gallery in Washington, VA, Arts Alliance @Jarett Thor in Colonial Beach, VA. , Va and Brush Strokes Gallery in Fredericksburg, Va. and have had solo shows as well as group shows.  I continue to participate in workshops as part of my goal to be a lifelong learner.  I am a member of the Mid Atlantic Pastel Society and have been jurored into the Pastel Society of America as an associate member.

I find that I have many visual statements to make and constantly search for new outlets of expression as I continue my learning experience.  Painting is not just about representing things and ideas but making statements that reflect my personal responses.
